Job guide — Directing

For directors: write and prepare the staging, approve casting, follow the shooting schedule and the set.

1. Your role in Kinelux

The “Director” access template gives you edit rights on the script, the breakdown, the visuals and the set, and read access to the shooting schedule and the call sheets. You can see the casting talent pool and approve the choices.

2. The script and the bible

  • The script editor keeps each scene with its heading (INT/EXT, linked location, time of day, story day), its characters and its blocks.
  • The bible brings together the world, the characters, the tone and the themes; the script analysis relies on it.
  • The story day (D3, N2…) is entered in the scene heading: the shooting schedule picks it up, with no retyping.

3. The breakdown

  • The shot list lists the shots of each scene (shot size, lens, camera move, description). You reorder it by dragging, with the mouse or with your finger on iPad (long press on the handle).
  • The corkboard shows the scenes as cards; you move them the same way.
  • The shots in the shot list are the ones the script supervisor finds on set, in the app.

4. The visuals

  • Storyboard and Studio: images and videos of the shots, with your fal key (no Kinelux credits).
  • Lighting Diagram: 2D and 3D lighting plan, real fixtures, reference render; see the video tutorial in the help.
  • The asset library (characters, locations, props) is the single source: an image added to a location is used everywhere.

5. Casting

  • You receive the casting presentations (photos, videos, self-tapes) and give your opinion for each role.
  • The “Casting reviewer” template can also be used to bring the production or a client into the approval.
  • Details: Casting and extras guide.

6. The shooting schedule and the set

  • The shooting schedule and the day view show the order of the scenes, the estimated times and the map of the day's locations (Shooting schedule guide).
  • Each day's call sheet reaches you through a personal link (Call sheet guide).
  • During the shoot, the set log (kept by the script supervisor) shows the completed shots and the circled takes; the editor's report lists the selected takes and the shots to redo.

7. With Claude (MCP)

The Kinelux connector for Claude reads and edits the project with your permissions: scenes, bible, breakdown, lighting plans, shooting schedule days, set reports. For example, ask “Summarize the night scenes of Day 3”.

8. Frequently asked questions

  • I can't edit the shooting schedule? That is expected with this template: ask the 1st AD or the production.
  • An image doesn't show in the storyboard? Check your fal key in your profile.
